Default guild m20 vs ibanez ac240 vs eastman e2om/acom2

my coworker is looking to buy an all hog, $1K or under. He can get a really good deal on a new guild usa m20 under $900 or go a cheaper route for ibanez ac240 or eastman e2om/acom2. He's just looking for singer songwriter guitar, not playing in a band. Volume isnt important. Just inspiring sound.

Anyone think he should steer away from the guild m20? Guess if he waits long enough he can hold out for a used 0-15 or 00-15 from martin under $1K.

Tell him to check out the Fender PM1 all Mahogany, as well. Surprisingly nice guitar. Light as a feather. Easy to play. Wonderful tone. I've seen one here for under CDN$800.00

Consider also the Fender all hog PM series and Martin ooo-rs1/Drs1. Both very nice indeed.

I'm not very familiar with the others, but I always find that Ibanez to be the best of the inexpensive mahogany guitars.

Here ya go. This one's box is 5 inches deep and has a great tone. Don't know why Ibanez discontinued it. It has the open-pore no-gloss finish I prefer.

I briefly had a new m20. I ended up returning it because it arrived with a cracked brace. I opted not to replace it because I had second thoughts about whether I really needed another guitar.

That said, I really liked the m20, and I can't see any reason your friend should steer away from it if he's looking for an US-made all solid 00 sized mahogany guitar. That's a great price if he can get it for that.

EDIT: I don't blame the cracked brace on Guild quality control. I bought it at a discount online from a retailer selling it as "open box," and it's very possible the damage was caused by a previous buyer or during shipping. Other than that defect, it seemed to be a very well-made instrument.

I would take a look at the Alvarez AP66SHB as well.

The OP would like to limit choices and not get presented with more useless options. Guild M20 is probably at least a few steps above the other ones, and probably on par with the Martins. So no reason to wait for a used one (without warranty and potential other issues) unless he has a distinct preference for neck shape.

That Guild M20 is a great sounding guitar. I just watched a review and if you're looking for a quality, good sounding and good looking mahogany guitar this is one that should be at the top of your list.

I’ve been looking at all mahogany 00 or smaller for more than a year. Played the Ibanez and Alvarez models previously mentioned, plus some outstanding Martin 00 and 0-15 custom models at Gruhn’s. Even considered jumping right to the top of the heap with a 00-17 Authentic 1931 (still on my dream list). Factoring finances, nut widths, and sound I finally went with the Guild M-20. It arrived a few hours ago right before I had to go out to dinner with the family. Only had a short time with it but the initial impression is very good. My favorite John Fahey tune sounds just right on the M-20

No brainer for me. Buy the M-20. I've got a 1968 version and I'd run into a burning house to retrieve it if necessary. The newer ones are similar...and I like the Guild brand a lot. The M-20 is a guitar that is absolutely inspiring...a joy to play and hear. As someone said to me about the M-20....'play small' and you will be rewarded. So true. It isn't a rock'n roll strummer....but it strums quite well for what it is...played 'small'. It is a small 0 sized guitar +/-...short scale....the newer ones have a 1 3/4" nut though mine is a much narrower design. $900 is a GREAT deal for a new M-20 in my opinion...and it comes with a great case. No brainer.

I had the opportunity to play the M-20 locally and if I didn’t alrady have a 000-15 it might have followed me home. It’s a comfortable and articulate little instrument!

greatly appreciate all the responses. the m20 definitely has more of a following than i thought which is great. anyone by chance have any soundcloud clips or recordings of them playing/singing with the m20? feel free to pm me, if so. would love to hear what it sounds like. the main 1 i found on youtube is brian pounds singing death of me which sounds awesome.

I of course would love to spend as little as possible but sounds like m20 may be worth the upgrade over eastman or ibanez. the avn2 does seem like an interesting alternative though.
