20201116_102719.jpg. The peghead and Fretboard have abalone. Next frets and then carve... then I will get the OVERLORD back. John has it to copy the super comfy asymmetrical soft V/C neck carve (almost). I have really missed it! Go John Go!!!

And yes, my Mother in outlaw Phebe is still painting. Every time she finishes one somebody wants another. Kind of like John's work!

I am confident this one will be the best yet. John's work on #99 was staggering, and each of my four Customs has just gotten better and better.

Mike and a few others here know of what I type!

Salud

Getting very close now. I don't know how you have survived without that big ole axe of yours. Withdrawal symptoms I am sure.

I do have one JK here. And it gets played a LOT. The Big Gun. Our most recent. It is the same size as this build. 16.75" Lower Bout. Flamed Spanish Cedar and Super Cedar. Feels way smaller with the double bevels and Wedge. Comfort rules.

It has the Pablo Package works, too. Including the adjustment widget for the neck.

But I WILL be very happy to get the Maple/Cedar OVERLORD back.

Nice to have one for different tunings. And for a spare!!!

Go, John!

Smile This

Importing this from Mike's build thread:

pics in the following post. For some reason I can not delete this one???

Speaking of carbon fiber
The neck has a carbon fiber “D” tube embedded in it. It’s a pricey reinforcement but probably adds the maximum amount of neck stiffness short of solid steel and it is lighter than the wood it replaces.
Click here to see a large version

To stiffen that fingerboard extension which will be floating over the top with nothing under it except that quarter inch of wood you can see notched into the neck I embed more carbon fiber vertical rods. The D tube would be too thin and its engineered “box” structure reduced to weakness if it were extended into the fingerboard extension. SO

Two grooves are plowed into the walnut extension and into the meaty portion of the neck to house the carbon fiber rods

You can see the little rods awaiting their new home

Click here to see a large version

The rods are deeper than their slots. After they are epoxied in place the fingerboard will have shallow grooves plowed into the underside to accommodate the raised portion of the carbon fiber. When the fingerboard is glued in place the rods and the wood under the fingerboard extension and the fingerboard will become one unit and the carbon fiber will not be compromised as much by the inevitable tapering that happens to that walnut under the fingerboard when fitting the neck.

So all the CF is being clamped in place with straight edges to keep things straight and the cheeks for the peghead are also getting added. Click here to see a large version

All this is going in my build as well as Mike's, so I stole it from his thread! John did this on my last build, and on Steve's Koa Mitchell too.

20201123_101006.jpg

The Jescar hard Gold color frets look quite snazzy against the black Ebony and Abalone. Side markers next...

.20180608_154424.jpg

Here is John's OVERLORD neck, which I have asked him to copy. I really LOVE the high visibility bone side markers. They are most helpful in the heat of battle, especially when playing lap slide, or bottleneck with a harmonica in the rack. I have high hopes of live gigs again before I am out of commission from old age! Hahahaha

John is on a roll. Hanter must be getting pretty excited by now! And I know Mike will be stoked to get his new #1!

everyone stay vigilant and well and play pretty!

WOW! That looks superb, Paul!

Won't be long now!

I've taken to calling this guitar the RBG (Really Big Guitar)! of course, the full Pablo-package makes it much more comfy for the common man!

Have fun--hope you get to take this out for live gigs soon...

Looks so comfy! Makes you wanna snuggle up to this guitar. Lovely Kiaat bevels with very interesting grain and that contrasts so nicely with the dark Brazilian. Beautiful!

Thanks to all for following along and the kind comments too!

I just spoke with John. He called to double check my wishes for the asymmetrical neck carve on this guitar. Really, just in between the last two.

Roughed out neck. Note the holes in the heel for the neck adjustment mechanism

.20201124_091905.jpg

Side markers in. I love the wood used in the vise to cushion the neck! This has been through a few jobs before!!!

20201124_110817.jpg

Progress!

This is looking so beautiful, Paul! The pictures do look like the "full Pablo treatment". The shape of the instrument is familiar. But these woods will be special!!

Happy Thanksgiving! Soon this beauty will be home!

Thanks Beth. Hope you are continuing to mend, and able to dance soon!
Tell Randy we send good vibes!!!

The neck is finished and taking a sun bath on John's porch... and I get a groovy sunburst neck to tie the dark DARK BRW box and HS backstrap together. Whee
