Archtop, F-hole Pick-up/Amp Options
If I need to move this over to the Archtop Forum, please let me know.
Been doing some research on how to amplify an f-hole style archtop without making it permanent and need help. The "monkey-on-a-stick seems to be the ideal option but I can only find the old vintage ones and they're over $500!!! Are there modern cheaper versions of these made? Can a pick-up be installed without drilling into the guitar? How does the microphone option work? Does it plug into your amp? Thoughts on acoustic microphone systems? Bottom line is that I do not want to permanently attach or drill holes into my guitar. Recommendations are welcome. Thanks!

Relax, they’re still made.
https://reverb.com/marketplace?query...&condition=new As far as using a mic? That’s even easier as long as volume over other loud instruments isn’t an issue. If you have an acoustic amp it’s even better because they’re full range like most mics. Regards, Howard Emerson |

You should talk to Jason over at Krivo pickups...he makes several easily mountable/removable options that might interest you--and he's a cool guy, to boot.

I have an old Framus f hole that's had all kinds of bits and pieces added and removed (by me) over the years.
The style of music you're playing might determine your pickup choice - George Benson implies a nice creamy magnetic humbucker while country/folk would be better served with a piezo saddle pickup or K&K style stick-on piezo elements. I'm not a fan of mics as quality of outcome is generally situation dependent and I've got other things to worry about. I've just fitted a two-piece K&K (Twin Spot) to the Framus and it sounds great, a tiny bit dry but definitely useable. I'm told not to expect miracles regarding gain before feedback but if I was going to gig with this one again I would refit a saddle pickup. The Twin Spot has an "external fitting" option which allows to attach a line socket with mini cable ties rather than drilling holes in your baby. See Austin Clarke's post on this thread: https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...mp-K-Twin-spot

I wanted to put a mag pup on my gibson
tg-50 (think L50 with a tenor guitar neck.) There was no room under the strings at the end of the fretboard. Can these " rhythm chief" pickups be mounted in front of the bridge?? |

Pick-up at Bridge
Varmonter I am no expert by any means so verify this but from the Youtubes I've watched, particularly the one below, it appears that each guitar top will differ in terms of whether or not it will fit under the strings according to this gentleman's comment about pick-up placement. Hope this helps!

I use a clip on condenser microphone with a small gooseneck clipped to the tailpiece.

Slide it back toward the bridge, by all means, but: If you're going to purchase a newer one make sure it is NOT the unit with 6 pole pieces. You'd want the unit that has no pole pieces. If you can find an old Dearmond Mandolin pickup, on the other hand, it MAY work out perfectly. And I will bet that Dearmond also made many tenor guitar pickups of varying types...... .....and they did, but they're also called Dearmond Mandolin Pickups. Google is your friend. HE |

Are you aware of the thinner humbucker pickups by Kent Armstrong (and others) for such applications? I considered one but went for an "acoustic" vibe instead and fitted some piezo elements.
