Default NGD: Les Paul Classic P90

I actually got this a few weeks ago but haven't posted it. I bought this from a fellow forum member. This is a 2018 Gibson LP Classic in Pelham Blue with P90s. I love P90s and this guitar does not disappoint!20220406_192855.jpg20220406_192904.jpg

That must be a great guitar. I recently bought a LP. Jr with a single P90 and love it. Have fun.

The very first 1952 LP goldtops (AKA "Standard") were equipped with P-90's...

The 1954-57 LP Custom "Fretless Wonder" boasted an Alnico in the neck position and a P-90 at the bridge...

I own a 2011 Limited Edition Studio '60s Tribute P-90 goldtop - essentially your guitar in satin finish '56-style livery - as do a couple other AGF'ers...

P-90 LP's are cool guitars with a voice all their own, very different than what comes to mind when most players think "Les Paul" - and no player's tone arsenal is truly complete without one. IME you won't find a better straight-ahead classic-rock (or surf... ) guitar, you can dial it back for some sweet Bop-era jazz tones (bear in mind that the LP - unlike its erstwhile Fender competitors - was originally conceived as a solidbody jazz guitar), it'll even get some cool Gretsch-on-steroids country sounds if you run through your American-voiced amp's low-gain input (flatwound strings recommended for the last two BTW) - and when you need something a little bit outside the Fender single-coil/Gibson-humbucker sonic box, it's nice to have the distinctive P-90 LP tone at your fingertips to help jumpstart your creativity and/or add that je ne sais quoi to a track...

Use it well, often, and LOUD...

What a beautiful guitar that is. I really like the lighter stain mahogany they used with the Pelham Blue top. A really sharp looking instrument. Someday you must do a photo montage of your guitar collection, BoneDigger. That would be wonderful to see!

Lesters and P90s are a match made in heaven. Some of the best sounding guitars I’ve ever played. I’m not comfortable playing Les Pauls these days - I play seated and the location of the leg cut pulls the guitar too far to the right for me to easily reach the upper frets and I’m always hitting the neck pickup with my picking hand. And ultimately, my back would always be sore from the amount of twisting a Les Paul forces me to do. So I play a Pelham blue SG with P90s, which sounds about as good in a sort of different way, and I can play it all day. But if I still played standing, as I did in my youth, I’d no doubt have a Les Paul with P90s. Outside of a strat, it’s kind of my dream electric guitar. I’d personally want it to be a gold top or TV yellow, but I’d be happy as a pig in slop with that blue beast too!

Enjoy,

-Ray

Congrats! I just scratched my P90 itch with a Fender Noventa Telecaster (single pickup).

I love them in a Les Paul. I bet it’s fantastic.

Congrats...

I like that pelham blue finish too.

Gibson P90s are nice, I have a set in my SG Classic. Love the raw gritty tone they produce

Todd, congrats on the fantastic Gibson! I have the same 2011 Limited Edition Studio '60s Tribute P-90 goldtop that Steve mentioned above. Gibson does a great job with their P-90s.

That's a beautiful Pelham Blue. Enjoy!

Indeed, that is super nice. I have to content myself with an Epiphone SG Classic with P90s. They are wonderful pickups though.

Question for you Gibson P90 guys: Do the Gibson dog ear P90s sound different than the Gibson soap bar P90s? I.e., are they different pickups or just different shapes?

Btw, Bonedigger, that is one fine looking LP. I love that Pelham Blue.
