If you can get away with a microphone it is almost always worth it, the sound has more air and sounds more natural. If I can I blend a mic and pickup signal through a Headway Preamp. Playing solo I can often use a higher mic value than the pickup but in other situations I find that even just 10-20% of mic makes things a lot better.

Playing in more humbler setting than Michael I have found that even the relatively inexpensive and basic AKG C1000 adds quite a lot of nice sound to the blend.

You have to pick your spot though and a preamp with a notch filter allows you to get a bit of extra head room from the Mic.

Recently I've been relying on a Headway under saddle pick-up mostly but hop to be trying our blending this with a DPA 4099 shortly.

Depends on the gig.

Solo acoustic guitarist in a concert situation, yes it is the best sound, especially with a good PA and sound man.

With a group, maybe. (Bluegrass groups do well with one LDC.)

Playing a standard (noisy) bar/restaurant gig? Well, I did a few of those before Ovations and Fraps hit the market. Not easy, sound wasn't so good, got a lot of woofy tones and you pretty much had to stay put to get anything at all.

With a band, or anything with drums - forget it
