I looked at the spec's too. They say True bypass, but there is a difference between a mechanical true bypass and a buffered true bypass. My guess is it is a buffered true bypass the keeps the circuit powered on or off, causing the "bump" of volume from the buffer. Just a guess.

The processed straight sound might also have a bit of compression applied which could significantly lower the amount of microphone headroom before feedback.
