You could get one of the dirty thirties mandos by Recording King. About &150 so not far off a Uke cost. I tried one once and it didn't sound half bad for what it was.

By the way, Karen, if you decide you'd like to look into getting a mandolin, the best place to ask questions is www.mandolincafe.com.

Like AGF, it has lots of pros there, lots of knowledge, and lots of friendly people eager to introduce newcomers to the wild and wacky mandosphere.
