Default Anyone familiar with this unusual guitar?

I'm curious if anyone is familiar with or has ever seen this guitar (or one similar) before.

Here's the story:

An internet acquaintance, upon learning that I played classical guitar, mentioned that he had a guitar I may be interested in. As he describes it, several years ago it was made by the instructor of a "Build your own guitar" course at the University of Pittsburgh, as his example for the class, and upon completion was sold at a fundraiser auction. My acquaintance was quite taken with the unusual design, and purchased it. There is no label and he has no records of the maker's name. He does not play classical guitar, and therefore (by his own admission) can't evaluate it accurately, but offers that the construction is immaculate and that it seems to have a nice, pleasant tone.

He offered it to me for a relative pittance (comparable to a low-end student guitar). I am torn -- it could be a real gem, and a heck of a deal. On the other hand, it is several states away, and I would not be able to evaluate it until after purchase.

If anyone has any information or recollection of this guitar's history, I'd be greatly obliged. I'm sorely tempted to buy it just out of curiosity.

Have a friend who built one that looked very much like it with a different style on the sound holes. His goal was a more ergonomic guitar. I actually liked his very much.

The one you posted looks like it has a birch top which would not be my choice.
