Default "applied" dovetail

What's the difference? I see it on Martin's site in reference to the new ukes. On the specifics on say the new Style-2 it says applied dovetail, on the Style 3-5 it says simply dovetail.

Google is your friend. Here's a pdf with an explanation.

Thanks, but it's asking me to log on.

Anyone with a simple concise definition? I have google'd, and all the info in the many pages is about Martin guitars, no explanation. After 10 pages, it just seems that a luthier, repairman, guitar tech or two would know what it is, thus the post.

Just want to know the difference between "applied dovetail" and "dovetail" joint. Martin uses both.

Probably a term Martin made up. I'd email their customer support and ask.

My guess would be a dovetail that involves fasteners rather than just the tightness of the joint and glue. (But that's a total guess.)

Ok, guys, thanks.

I DID use Google. I HAVE emailed customer support. I have not called them, so if anyone would like to suggest that, feel free.

I looked on the Martin Site and I see the term. I've never heard that term before.

It seems to me that a neck joint is either a dovetail or it's not.

It's a new thing for Martin, so all we can do is speculate. Or Neal can take apart his uke.

You might ask Steven Kovacik. He recently sold some Martin uke parts.

If you Google the link, you will receive few results, click on Quick view and you will be able to preview the page.

It seems that "applied dove tail" is a piece of wood in the shape of the tail (from dovetail), bolted on the other part of the joint.

Thanks Eugenro, got the page, got nothing from it though, I do appreciate your take on it.

I thought one of the luthiers would know the difference, if any. I AM in the right sub-forum... let me check... yep, build and repair.

It's probably Martin-speak that you guys just aren't familiar with.

Any luthier types care to take a wild guess?

This is a piece of the document that sachi indicated us.
I made two red arows - if you consider that part of the drawing being a cross-section of the neck-joint, looking from the top,
1 is the neck block
and
2 is the neck,
the "tail" of the "dovetail" is made from o distinct piece of wood and bolted to the neck. That is what I understand from the picture that is an applied dovetail.

Thanks again! I see the thing you're talking about, on a neck though, the part screwed would be into the neck block, and that seems to me like added work, and from what I gather, Martin did this to save time and cost.

I have an email to Elderly asking about it. Those guys should have the scoop. Shoulda thought of that before!!

Kudos to eugenro2001, that's an extra mile dude.
