A profound quote
It's been around for a while but I just heard it on the radio today, for the first time. From Jean Michel Basquiat (1960 - 1988)
"Art is How We Decorate Space, Music is How We Decorate Time"

Hadn't thought about it that way, but it makes complete sense.

Through the ages music has been ephemeral. Art has been less so.

Music is also very transient. Once created it is gone and must be recreated in order to hear it again. Even recordings need to be replayed. Art, on the other hand has much more permanence. It can be seen over and over again, but I’m not too sure that this is an advantage. It’s permanence may lead to it becoming mundane and common.

This makes me think of Eno's "Bell Studies for the Clock of the Long Now."

I prefer silence to a lot of music that's out there currently! I can avoid poor art but bad music is an invasion of my space! The radio on/off switch and the "Mute" button on my TV get used quite often! Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy what I consider "good" music!

Oh yeah, music is all about the passing of time. It’s no wonder some cultures have held musicians in high regard, as if they were mystics. As far as I know, acting is the only other art form that is built on and around the passing of time.

About a year ago, just before the lockdowns, we were at music festival where the sound system power went out right in the middle of one of the headliner's biggest songs. The whole crowd continued singing and the drummer kept time as if nothing happened. It was pretty cool in the moment but in hindsight, this whole crowd coming together right before the lockdowns where we all had to stay apart was pure magic!

I like it! I needed to read it twice to make sure I understood it correctly.
Both are important for cultures to express themselves and both do live throughout time - not just music. |
