Kiri as a guitar wood?
I have some invasive princess trees (polonia tomentosa) that I have been trying to get rid of and out of curiosity I cut planks from a tree, dried it and planed it flat. It rings loudly when tapped and is light as a feather (really) the wood is called kiri in Japan and is the wood of choice for making the national stringed instrument called the Koto. I'm so impressed with the sonic properties that I think it could at least be used for some internal components in guitar construction. Linings and such. Maybe more. As you can see from the grain lines it's a fast grower.

Very interesting. I am looking forward to seeing it being used. What's great solution to a "problem"

Is this the same tree also called royal paulownia, with purple flowers?
(added) Wikipedia tells me it is, and that it used in many musical instruments, electric guitars as the main body, laminated under more durable woods. Last edited by The Watchman; 12-06-2021 at 10:35 AM. |

Yes it is. Here in the botanical garden of Asheville there was a huge polonia that fell. Word got out and a Japanese fellow came and bought the fallen tree for a sizable sum.

I believe this is the same wood from which Jason Kostal and others built instruments for Jimmy Carter. The wood came from a plantation that Carter planted. Here's a video where Michael Watts talks to Jason about it...

Drew Heinonen built one for Mr. Carter as well.

I need to treat these trees with more respect, though they really are invasive. Just when you think you've discovered something new there is a queue in front if you.

Tony Yamamoto builds with paulownia quite successfully

I am familiar with Tony's use of Pawlonia and have great respect for that. But wasn't aware of his physical difficulties and hope he gets over them and back to creating his masterpieces.
Of course the question is, "Does Jimmy Carter play?"

Funny…
Here it is an invasive pest. In Japan it is a revered source of musical goodies.
So it goes…. This would not be the first wood from your yard to be used in a build. Very cool imho. Paul

I had a tele that was made from polonia. That guitar was just under 5lbs. It was so light it felt strange. Guitar sounded ok, but I preferred the sound of my ash and alder ones more. But man that wood was super light weight! I have no ida how it would be on an acoustic. I do remember it was really soft and dinged very easily.
