Default NGD: Taran Tirga Mhor

Well...I wasn't going to be in the market for another guitar for a couple of months, but I couldn't pass this one up and the wife had no objections. I just took delivery of a Taran Tirga Mhor yesterday evening. I'm pretty happy with it so far, but it definitely needs some new strings and I don't have the right kind that I plan to put on it...so that will have to wait until stores open back up after Christmas. Anyways, I'm sure some of you will recognize this as the DS3...aka Martin Simpson's first Taran.

Congratulations on your new guitar. I hope you enjoy it once you get your new strings.

I had that floated under my nose a while back as an alternative to a new one from Rory. I passed and so never got to play it: I'm really looking forward to hearing how you find it.

I see that from all of the wonderful instruments at his disposal, Mr. Simpson chose his Taran for his Christmas Day Instagram today. That must tell us all something...

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks everyone. If not for the long wait, I probably would've opted for a new one, but I'm glad I didn't. I just put it back in the case after playing it again and it just has so much life to the sound even with old strings. I'm kicking myself for not having some new medium-light PB strings on hand knowing this guitar was coming. I really wanted something that would complement my Ryan Nightingale...something with a bit more note separation, slightly less overtones, and a strong bass note that gets out of the way (but not too quickly). The DS3 is checking every box. The fact it was Martin's guitar and the first Taran with compression braces and the glueless neck joint is just a bonus. Very happy.

Hope all of you have a great Christmas. My household is having to stay home after my wife was exposed to COVID and we both came down with minor (very manageable) symptoms. I'm not complaining about more time with the Taran.

Very cool guitar, always thought that top was remarkable! Still getting to know my new Taran. Quite a rewarding, unique experience. Enjoy in good health

Thanks! Getting to know it is a good way of putting it. I'm enjoying the Taran more each time I play it. I think the "spit" that Rory talks about makes it a very dynamic guitar where I'm having to learn to pull back at times, but it's so much fun to have such a wide range available. I'm miles away from being a good player, but I'm already getting better because of the Taran.

Thanks! I'm not used to seeing much bearclaw swiss spruce, so the top feels pretty special. The Hiscox case is nice, but I actually plan to get a nice orange Calton case for it. I just love Calton cases and have always wanted a nice orange case.
