Default Using Jon’s Octave macro that creates multiple IR files is a lot of fun!

A quick warning… this could get a little geeky.

I’ve recently been working with Jon, who is the creator of a macro that’s run within a computer (PC or Mac) application called Octave. When supplied with a stereo source file of at least 30 seconds, where the right-panned side is your pickup output and the left-panned side is a mic output, the macro creates a series of IR wav files of differing pickup percentages (0, 25, 40, 50, 60, 75).

As some of you know, I’ve been attempting to get a great acoustic sound on a medium to loud stage. And what I’ve repeatedly found is that when things are loud, mic-like realism is not what I want. It sounds WAY too strident. I have to cut the trebles HUGELY. In fact, as the volume rises my raw LR Baggs Anthem SL pickup (with a fixed mic percentage that the manufacturer decided on) sounds much better than at relaxed restaurant volumes where it sounds plasticky.

That’s where Jon’s macro really shines. I can apply EQ to the source to defeat the runaway treble and anything else I don’t like, which means there’s very little if any EQ needed at the board (or IR loader). Further, I can select the amount of pickup percentage that comes through by selecting the IR file used (0, 25, 40, 50, 60, 75).

So here’s a quick recipe if you’re interested in creating your own IRs…

1) Record about 45 seconds of picking/strumming via a two channel interface simultaneously employing a DI input from your pickup and a microphone.

2) Within your DAW, trim the two recordings down to about 35 seconds.

3) Apply any EQ you wish to the mic channel only. Do not use reverb or compression.

4) Pan the DI signal all the way Right and the Mic signal all the way left and adjust their individual volumes so that they’re close and neither peaks. Then bounce the output to a stereo wav file to use as the “source” for the creation of your IR files.

5) Download the Octave application here: https://www.gnu.org/software/octave/index

6) Create a text file called jf45irV30sec.m with the macro function found here: http://acousticir.free.fr/spip.php?article136

7) Put the macro and your source wav file together in a subdirectory somewhere and run the Octave application.

8) In the Command Window of the Octave application, run Jon’s macro by typing in something like jf45irV30sec(‘YourSourceFile’)

Having done all of this you’ll be rewarded with a series of IR wav files that you can load into your pedal.

Brave new world. Have fun!
