Default Tell Me ABout The Guild D-55...

A few weeks back, I bought a Gibson Firebird from a buddy who lives in Boston. He sold it to me for $650.

Last night, I was talking to a friend who's tours with a very well known country artist. When he's not touring, he plays in a local bar here with some of the local heavy-hitters.

Last night I commented on the Gibson Explorer he was playing, and mentioned that I had just bought that Firebird. Before long, the discussion turned to talk of a trade, but not for the Explorer. He has a beautiful Guild D-55E Sunburst that he said he would consider trading away.

When I commented on the fact that such a trade would be pretty lopsided in my favor, he said "I don't care. Will you play it?"

I don't know a great deal about Guilds. I've never owned one, although the D-55 is the one which, if I was going to own one, I'd buy. It just looks like a snazzy tuxedo to me.

I have to imagine there are those here who own the guitar, so I thought I'd ask for input from those folks. I think this guitar is gorgeous and, if my buddy floats the idea, I would be happy to add some cash to the deal.

I don't own one so can't give you a lot of info. I have played a few and they look and sound very nice. But one reason I don't own one is the scale length (25 5/8ths) which is an 1/8th longer than long scale. And while the D55 has a 1 11/16 nut width some of their other models the nut is even narrower. So just make sure you play it and it feels comfortable to you before making a trade.

One of my favorite guitars was a Guild D55. Had that sound that was perfect for strumming, with a slightly scooped midrange.
If it hadn't needed a neck reset I would still have it.

They are good guitars but if you are neck sensitive be aware- these a 1 and 11/16s at the nut

Yes, especially the sunburst. I have a 78 D-55 that I mothballed. Its a natural top. I regretted not waiting for the burst to come in.

It doesn't pretend to be a Martin. It's more balanced. It's a great guitar to sing with and one of the best looking guitars on the planet. I've never played one I didn't like. But you have to like it, and you should. Any era from any factory should do, as they are all good.

Pre internet if I had known anything about guitar humidification I’d still have mine
and it would be an almost 50 year old “vintage” guitar worth who knows what!
Don’t let it get away.

Consistently good guitars right through Guild's historic re-locations.

Waverly, Corona, Tacoma, New Hartford and now Oxnard.

There was a shift from gold Grover Rotomatic sealed gear tuners to gold Gotoh open gear tuners during the New Hartford era and continued through with today's Oxnard guitars.

I've read the Oxnard guitars are possibly being built a little lighter than the previous locations and are a touch more responsive but ALL D-55's are excellent guitars ... and that sunburst version pictured is superb!

One of the nicest guitars I’ve played. Do try a few different ones and choose the one you like if you can
