Fernando Sor Opus 35, No’17
Hi all
I have been working on various Etudes from Opus 60 and 35 and this is the most recent. For a novice level study I found it remarkably challenging - it teaches some key techniques such as use of left hand pinky with correct positioning along with layering of finger placement. It also suggests plenty of A finger use on the right hand. It’s a beautiful piece but frustrated me.. I hope you enjoy it.

What I find most challenging of all is to play it clean, especially with all the necessary hand shifts. I'm convinced that was part of Sor's intent with this study. Great job of it.

Thanks Andre, I’m pleased you had a listen - as you say, very tough to keep clean and allow the notes to ring but I learnt a lot and it forced me to practice with a better left hand position.

Very nice Peter!
There is so much great music for classical out there. You keep tempting me to pick mine back up.

The piece is subtle and well nuanced, and well played. I've enjoyed your work, thank you.

Very good! I’m not sure it’s a novice study though.

Thanks Chuck, it doesn’t feel like one but it’s listed as such by Sor!

I think you did a nice job of playing the piece and it sounds nice.
However, my suggestions on other of your pieces apply here: I'd like to hear more variation in tonal color and in dynamics. There should be building tension and release. Amongst the "tools" for aiding that are dynamics and variations in tonal color, particularly on a (classical) guitar. Perhaps, it is simply a difference in preference and/or interpretation of the piece, in which I prefer "more" and you prefer "less". |

Thanks Charles, very diplomatically put. I too like the tonal differences you mention but perhaps have to exaggerate them more for them to be felt and heard (I think I hear them when playing but they are not translating to you the listener) It’s a work in progress :-)

Very well played. You made it sound and seem easy- and it needs to sound that way, IMO- but it's not, with those shifts. Nice job not snatching at them!
Nice, effective ritard at the end, and I think a little more of that here and there would be effective- if *you* hear it that way- along with a touch more of color, as mentioned above. Really nice job. |

I'd suggest to start by exaggerating the heck out variations in dynamics and tonal colour. Later, make it more subtle if you prefer.
Apply those things not only to entire phrases but explore the possibilities for individual notes, particularly those of the melody. |
