Default Fanny Power - Steve Baughman/O'Carolan

Hi all

I recorded this tune in the Summer while doing a lot of playing outside and used my Zoom handheld. I always wanted to record a better quality version and I also knew I needed to play it better to try and do it justice.

Steve Baughman is one of my favourite players. His style is languid and flowing yet his timing is perfect. His attack is strong yet his playing sounds quiet and gentle - all of which makes for a tough act to replicate.

I asked our fellow forum member Doug Young for his help with this as I knew he had produced and mixed Steve's "The Celtic session's" originally. Doug was super helpful in offering up areas for improvement in my playing, and he also kindly offered to mix my final take for me (which is used here)

My recording space is a long way from perfect but it's not bad and I am fairly happy with the sound. The more time one spends on a piece, and the better it sounds, the more critical I become in wanting it to be perfect - but in this case I stopped here.

I hope you like it and a big thanks to Doug for all his help - I learnt an awful lot through the process.

Yes nicely played Wrighty, must have involved a lot of work but well worth the effort.

The recording tone is perfect to my ears.

Something for me to aspire to!

Nice playing too!

I may dust off my sdc mics to see how they work out with the same distance I used recently. Your mics sound crystal clear. I wonder if my "warm" ldc mics are too "warm"

Btw, which book of Steve's is the arrangement in?

That was wonderful Peter. Congrats on making such progress and sharing the journey so far (inspirational and educational). Folks like Doug are what make this forum community rewarding to be a part of, it’s so cool he helped you out on this project.

I started working on Mother Love this week and I’ve been listening to your recent performance of it a lot to get into the groove of it.

Cheers mate!

Thanks Barry - appreciate that.

Funny you mention clarity - my mics are definitely on the warm side so I am also looking for clarity. Worth trying your mics a little farther - they are decent mics.

Sorry - forgot to answer this.

It's in Celtic guitar method - I have it if you need a copy of this track.

Thanks very much Bob - I agree, this community is fantastic and Doug was very helpful and supportive and dedicated some time to help me which I really appreciated.

I am pleased you are giving "Mother love" a go, it's a lovely tune :-)
