I’ve owned at least 12 Martin’s over the last 18 years without a single issue. I know binding issues are out there. The idea of not buying a new Martin because it might need a neck reset, would never come into play.

My suspicion is that some of these guitars have tops that are bellying. I saw a new D35 at a shop recently that needed a neck reset already. They were having humidity controls issues and several guitars swelled up. My guess is the new lighter bracing on all models combined with natural wood variability and predetermined thicknesses leads to this. I'm sure it leaves the factory fine and begins to move thereafter. Maybe the neck, or maybe the top itself. Martin's are built lighter than most factory guitars. I recommend playing first. And I usually ask for a straight edge from the shop to check the neck before plopping down the cash. They get annoyed but I don't care.

I'm not sure Goodallboy's response makes me feel a lot better; I just celebrated my 69th birthday today.
I am glad to hear most of you have never had any problems with any Martins you have had. My experience has been much the same with the other new and used Martins I've owned, but I assure you that the problems I have had with the past two have been real and frustrating. |
