Have you heard? Three new Metheny classical crossover albums...
The new year is turning out to be the moment when Pat Metheny went classical- until he zigs in another creative direction, of course.
Last month, "Road to the Sun" was released, with two Metheny compositions for classical guitar. Pat plays only on one short tune, while Jason Vieux performs solo for an extended piece. The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet plays the namesake piece, inspired by a rollicking scenic drive of discovery in Glacier National Park. Because sometimes his 42-string Pikasso guitar isn't enough, the 49-strings of this eclectic quartet create a wide range of musical effects, from syncopated strumming in four parts to bluesy single-note leads to one of Pat's patented string-scraping interludes. A fine modern jazz guitarist, John Pizzarelli, uses seven nylon strings to explore the classic Metheny catalog in the new album "Better Days Ahead." John and his famed father Bucky turn out to be admirers of Metheny's body of work, all the way back to the original Group days. Both Bucky and his wife died of COVID last year. In the aftermath, John decided to delve into the Metheny-Mays catalog, translating the original large ensemble works to fit into one instrument. His versions are faithful, complex and heartfelt. This project is parallel to Vieux's "Images of Metheny," (2005) which I also just discovered. It's interesting to hear these two back to back. It would be fascinating to hear what an actual classical guitarist thanks of them. Have you heard?
