I like them to sit on their collar.

They were sitting at different heights on my Huss & Dalton until I re-worked them a little.

In the case of the Huss & Dalton the pins all sat down perfectly with the strings taken out ... but wouldn't sit down with strings back on.

It was simple - the bridge did not have a large 'ramp' groove from the pin hole so the gap was too small for the sting-end winding to come out cleanly and the pin was hooked up on the windings.

I didn't touch the guitar - I just extended the slots slightly in the pins to allow some room for the winding to clear - like the pin on the left in this picture.

If your pins sit flush with no strings then you can do the same.

If your pins still sit that high they are simply too big - you can ream the pin holes to make them larger but then your original pins will be too small.

I just bought these Martin pins, I thought they would sit perfectly like the ones that came with my D-13E but nope... Too big! I even looked at the sizes and compared the two and there appears to be no different, I don't know why one sits higher!
