Nice one Joe. I play that tune from time to time, but I don't think I've jammed to it before. I'll have to try. You and your son make it sound like fun...

This is the best thread!!! I've been itching to contribute, and haven't had time, but here is an early morning take on a cover of a Dead cover -- "Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie".

The back story with this song is that Jerry got the rights to re-record this song and gave all the proceeds to Elizabeth Cotten, the original artist, so that she would have some income. If you don't know her, look her up, she was really something else. More info here.

I'm still in very early stages of learning Reaper, so it's kind of rough, but I am looking forward to doing more with it.

The inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MktGhRNswwg

My take (morning voice actually helped with this one): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qoX...ew?usp=sharing

Feedback is welcome!

embo--welcome to the party, glad to have you

Thanks for link to the article, I had no idea that was a Libba Cotten tune. Sure wish we had more acoustic dead recordings like this one.

Looking forward to listening to your version when I'm not supposed to be working!

Some mad electric skills on MHS, Ray ... nice

Nice job on Minglewood, Bob. That one never really caught my attention until Jerry put a real edge on it in the 90s.

Lovely laid back Jerry groove, embo.

Cheers

Hi Embo,

I dug the Dead's version (reminds me of "Louis Collins" which Garcia and Grisman did - "Angels laid him away") and I read and really loved the story of why Elizabeth Cotton wrote it...

Really enjoyed your version too. Nice relaxed playing and your "morning voice" has a lot of Jerry character to it. I'm gonna have to check it out, but I'm gonna have to find a way to just strum it - my fingerpicking skills are limited and I MIGHT be able to play it, but no way in the world I can fingerpick and sing at the same time... And, no, babe, that ain't no lie!

Thanks, man! I tell ya, if you can make use of your pinky a little to add some flair to the C and F chords, you can strum this and make it sound awesome without the fingerpicking. It's pretty straightforward once you get the tempo down. Here's a tab I put together when I was learning it...maybe it can help you, too.

I decided not to bite that one off yet. But since part of the melody reminded me of Louis Collins, I gave that one a go yesterday. Not something the Dead played, but Jerry did a lot, with Grisman, Grisman and Rice, and probably some of his other acoustic outfits.

Thanks Ray. It’s a great lyric. A stretch for me but that’s ok
