ISO a very stable upright mic stand (non-boom)
I need to get a very stable mic stand, probably tripod style, but not boom style. Any ideas? I have one mic setup that has a large sound shield and the mic itself is heavy. The standard round base models get tippy. Ideas?

What's your budget ? and the mic weight should not make much difference Unless you plan on positioning the mic horizontal ?

For stability, it is important to get the centre of gravity as low to the floor as possible. Hard to do that with a tripod leg stand, unless you drape it with sand bags.
My preference in the studio is to use a heavy round base stand, such as this one: https://on-stage.com/products/view/11491 Quote:
They also make other models with even larger, heavier bases, for extreme loads. If money is no object, have a look at Latch Lake Stands. https://latchlakemusic.com/stands/mi...2200-straight/ The base alone weighs 29 lbs. |

I have some heavy round base mic stands and in order to add some weight to the bottom I used one 10 lb ankle weight. They look nice, soft material won't scratch anything and are pretty cheap.

Give the Atlas Sound MS25 a look. It sells in most places for about $150 and you're not tipping it over unless you hit it with a car.

In the meantime I use smalller free weights on the smaller solid base stands or sandbags on the tripod base ones.

I just got a couple DR Pro Tripod Mic Stands (MF Stupid Deal of the Day), and they seem plenty solid, with a rubber "shock" where the legs fold out. I like these better than the weighted base stands; definitely an upgrade from the OnStage mic stands I have been using for over a decade.
