Default Ackerman Tuning Challenge Song #1 - Whippoorwill

In his recent publicity around his new CD, Will Ackerman (Windham Hill founder) created a "challenge", asking people to see what they could do with one of his tunings, F C Eb Ab C Eb. Sounded like fun, especially since I'm always looking for interesting tunings to cover in my Peghead Nation course. I decided to tune down a half step - his exact tuning calls for every string except the 1st to be tuned UP, including bringing the A string all the way up to C!

Anyway, here's a new original tune using the tuning, played on my Kathy Wingert Model E

I am a long-time fan of William Ackerman's work, dating back all the way to Remedios, off of the debut album, with Darol Anger on violin.

Very nice piece here, brother. Thank you so much for posting it!

Very beautiful song with what appears to be a challenging tuning for sure!

I like that tune Doug. You've inspired me to give it a try later on this weekend, but I'm going to tune it down even more and use D A C F A C and throw a capo on somewhere,

Open tunings are amazing. They open up a lot of doors for alternate chord voicings that wouldn't have been possible, otherwise.

They also force you to think outside of the box, when attempting lead passages - always a good thing.

I think it may have been Ackerman's recordings that prompted me to realize this and always be intrigued by the kinds of sounds you get out of a guitar, in a nice open tuning.

They work wonders, when attempting original compositions, and can be truly inspiring.

Beautiful composition, Doug, and your playing is superb! Also, I love the sound of your Kathy Wingert Model E. All aspects of this video are really very appealing -- enchanting, even!

I l-o-v-e this... the composition, the sonics, the superb execution - everything. How could Mr. Ackerman not pick this one as the winner?

Really great stuff Doug. What a lovely sound you get out of that instrument.

Thanks Fran, I hope Kathy enjoys it. I know she heard it via my facebook post. I need to play that guitar more!

Doug, would you mind sharing the recording setup you used here? Sounds so good!

Thanks, glad you liked it. I did the recording a little differently than my other videos. I used a pair of Schoeps CMC6/MK41 mics, as seen in the video, as well as an Audio Technica AT405ST stereo mic (which I use alone in a lot of my videos) as a room mic, back around 3 feet and out of the camera. Both went into a SoundDevices MixPre-10 recorder. Then I mixed both tracks, keeping the room mic pretty low, in Logic, added a bit of reverb and so on, before synching with the video cameras.

Just gorgeous, really enjoyed this performance and the background to it. Thanks for posting Doug!

Thanks for sharing, Doug. Such tasteful mixing, too. If you don't mind my asking (again), what's different about your other videos? Last question... I promise.

I don't mind questions :-). The mic setup is different, I don't think I've used this exact setup before. Most of my recent videos have used the AT4050 stereo mic or Ear Trumpet mics - both have a smaller footprint and stay out of the way of the video pretty well. Here I have the Schoeps as spaced pairs (which I've probably used before in some older videos) and then the AT as a room mic. Just something I tried on a whim and it seemed to work ok.

I'm also not sure I've done any videos using the Wingert guitar.
