You did not buy it. You stole it!

We all could use co-workers like that.

I'd poke around on Reverb and just wait ... since you're looking for a beater and seeking suggestions, why not let the next sub-$200 bargain decide for you?

Yamaha FS800. Great build, great tone, solid top, scalloped bracing and $200 or less.

Don't ignore the used market. You might be pleasantly surprised what you can get, even (or especially) if it needs some work.

Might already be broken-in as a 'beater'.

Don (been there, done that, pleased with the results.)

I have two thoughts... Yamaha makes a great guitar, the FG800 for $200. HOWEVER if you have a Craigslist in your area look for a used guitar. Tons of them available everywhere.

I was lucky enough to find my "beater that wasn't" six blocks from my house. I'm embarassed to say what I paid for it. The girl who sold it obviously didn't know what she had. I bought it but can't bear to use it as a beater . Here is my "beater" next to my #1...

If you want a beater, MF has a sale on Rogue RD-80 dreadnoughts right now for $49.99. It's not a bad guitar. I have a Rogue 12 string and I really like it.

My beater is a Sigma GCS3. It has low action and lots of saddle and is as stable of a guitar as I could want. It plays just like any of my Martins. It's may not be easy to find a made in Japan, like mine, that does not need a neck reset. ,

Heck, Rex, even before I opened this thread, Yamaha was the first brand that popped into my head.

I have a large market here in L.A., so in this location I'd just go on CL and have many clean, used Yammies to choose from. Most of these would likely be in the $100-150 range. And, as you know, Yamaha guitars are built rock-solid.

Why look anywhere else?

Ditto on this, Vin. Great used products from Yammie, built like an ice-breaker.

Looking for a beater? Check out the pre-loved market in your area.

I like old Pencos and Fannins, but a new Gretch Jim Dandy is good for the price.

On the cheap I'd go with a Yamaha FG700 or FG800, maybe a small step up would be a Takamine G series. I'd try to find a good deal on a used one for lake house/camping.... If you want to spend a little more, C. F. Martin X series since they are all high-pressure laminate they are consistent regardless of temp/humidity levels... great for outdoors and also popular with buskers for this reason. If you want to spend a lot, get a carbon fiber Rainsong or something comparable.

I'd go to some pawnshops and look for something suitable.

This is a used FS700 for $99. Something like this is what you want.

I play mine regularly. It sounds sweet for being a cheapie.
