I had the Shadow and couldn't get any depth out of it. The Roland looks great except for one thing- it needs power. Porchboard Bass is passive and sounds really good but is $$.

Is that thing at all responsive to how hard you tap it?

I'll let you know in a week or so. I've got one, but haven't unboxed it yet. The gigs I have over the next week are cruisy ones and I won't need it. I currently use a couple of different stomp boxes (for different sounds), and sometimes a tambo mounted to a kick drum pedal. As the Roland unit has a variety of kick drum type sounds and other percussion samples, I'm hoping to be able to use just it.

I own one and use it multiple times weekly.

Strengths: Great sounds. The 808/909 sounds are super fun, and a good alternative to the more acoustic sounding standard kicks. Sensitivity/threshold controls are perfect. Built tough. Pitch tuning for each sound is really handy...ESPECIALLY the 909 sound if you use open tunings a lot. It's like adding a bass drone to your song in addition to low end rhythm.

Weaknesses: Can be tough to use as a foot kick due to the design...to my knowledge, only a single product has overcome this via a laser. I haven't found a single surface that the stock rubber pads actually grip to. It has a tendency to migrate slowly across the floor as a result.

Overall: Exactly what I expect from Roland/BOSS. Good, usable sounds, solid construction, slightly premium price.

I had one and thought it was well-made. I didn't like the ergonomics. (Side note, sold the Roland and bought a Finhol laser kick for better ergonomics, but learned that I just don't have the skill needed to use a foot pedal, nor the patience to develop that skill).
