The problem I see is that as you are playing it, all the music will fall out onto the floor and make a huge mess. I think we had better get you a whole guitar.

Default Brazilian Rosewood Headplate

I bought this dirt encrusted log years ago. I was visiting a friend of a friend: a retired wood broker who had some odd inventory he was trying to sell off. I bought a bunch of cocobolo sets, some ebony , some sapele planks, and I was going out to my car to get my checkbook when I noticed an old log holding the door of the shipping container open. Somehow, it looked interesting, so I asked what it was. "Oh, just some old Brazilian rosewood junk" he said. It did indeed look like junk, all split and spidery covered, but I bought it. There were about 8 moderate sized chunks I bought, and I got them very cheaply. Over the years, I have cut so many useful parts out of them- Bridges, plates, even fingerboards. The sad part is that there were several more of them, but I had spent all my money......oh well.

Here I am cutting a head plate out of this beautiful chunk of curly BRW for Dale's WarHorse. This looks AMAZING under finish.

Cool story. Glad you didn't let that pretty BRW go to waste.

Yeah, I guess you are right, it is pretty messy when I play anyway so to have to clean up every time would be a pain.

That is some wonderful grain in that head stock veneer. This guitar is going to be pretty special.

Well, that's it. I'm gonna have to get a guitar just like this. Put me down on your wait list please. Hmmm, now have to sell something...

It is. Lots and lots of prep and planning for this one.

Default The beating Heart of The Beast

Im not sure how Dr. Frankenstein built his monster, but I am starting Dale's monster with the beating heart of the thing: the scale. Because this is a multi scale, and my first at that, I have done a full scale mock-up to make sure I am thinking clearly. I have here a test fingerboard stuck down to a work board where I have all my parameters sketched out.

Along the way, the design for a new tool that helps to set the proper intonation for a multi scale occurred to me. It's kind of hard to explain how it works, but it helps me avoid my arch-nemesis, which is using a ruler or tape to measure things. (I use the actual parts to measure as much as possible, because in my experience, almost all my errors come from measuring and transfer).

Lastly is the bridge. It is the same footprint as my regular bridge, but it is slightly asymmetrical to accommodate the 8.5 degree path the strings take across the body of the bridge.

You can skate on most of the math by acquiring the heart of Ben’s beautiful fixture. I have more of them.

Math???

Hey, wait a dog-gone minute!!! Nobody told me that math would be involved when I signed up for this guitar-building-thing-a-ma-jiggy-fun-stuff-weekend-campfire-weenie-roast-jiffy-pop-singalong-hooplah-pancake-and-blueberry-festival🤨

I might have to re-think this whole guitar-building thing🤔

There's a work around: you can use arithmetic instead!

Nice layout, wondering if you will skew the x-braces a bit to try and compensate for angle of the bridge? Something I have always wondered about the multi-scale.

Yes, I will be compensating for that angle, especially with the bridge plate. That's one of the reasons I started with the fingerboard and bridge layout, because that will dictate how I build the top, where I put the sound hole, etc. Good question!
