1 5/8 vs 1 3/4
anyone think you can feel the difference between the two;at the nut? At Warmouth ,I talked to a guy who said he doesn't feel any difference at all.just wondering.

I can certainly feel a difference between 1 5/8" and 1 3/4" nut width on an electric guitar. All of mine are at about 1 11/16". 1 5/8" is pretty narrow and for me, 1 3/4" is way too wide on an electric.

I'm surprised the guy at Warmoth said that. He must not be a guitar player (no disrespect to him).
Although I can play either on acoustic, on electric I have no desire to play 1 3/4". I can easily tell the difference between 1 3/4" and 1 11/16", which is what my electrics are. That means there's even a bigger difference with 1 5/8" (which is 1 10/16"). |

I have three electric guitars. One has a 1 5/8” nut, another 1 11/16” and the third 1 3/4”.
I can certainly tell the difference between them - but I don’t care about it. There are so many other differences between the three that the nut width just doesn’t stand out as significant to me. Maybe that’s what the Warmoth guy meant?

100%. I can feel the difference between 1 23/32 and 1 3/4.
Tight string spacing makes it hard for me to play cleanly.

Of course I can feel the difference! My 6 string acoustic has a 1 3/4" nut width, while my 1975 Gibson ES-345 has 1 5/8"... night and day!
I don't tend to play a whole lot down around the nut on the Gibson; when I do, it gets pretty crowded down there in a big hurry!

I grew up with those early/mid-60's thin necks generally associated with Gibson and Fender, and whether electric or acoustic they're still my favorite for all-around playing; in fact, speaking as the original owner of a '64 Gretsch Double Annie I find it disappointing that the current company didn't adopt the period-correct dimensions for their Professional Series reissues ('62 Country Gent/Tennessean, discontinued 6117 Double Annie/'62 6120 AKA Nashville/'62 tribute White Falcon) - surprisingly enough the (also discontinued) MIK 5400/5600-Series Electromatics came very close, albeit slightly chunkier overall (particularly in the upper register)...

All my electrics are narrower/similar nut widths. Some of my acoustics are 1 3/4” and strangely enough they are different. Not in making left hand adjustment so much though. For me, finger style is much easier to execute with a wider nut width. Such a small fraction of difference, but is discernible.
