I killed Rudolf
I guess it might be the holiday season but, this morning when I came into the shop I looked at that stag head I have on the headstock and all I could see was Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. So this stag now has a black nose and everything else is filled in with black too. I think it all goes better now. The craggy overlay if filled with black. The guitar overall has such a subdued look so the inlay shouldn't jump out as much as it did:

Colors
I'm about halfway through the French polishing. At this point the color has come up to what it will be. I like how the old Eastern Black Walnut takes on such a rich reddish brown compared to a younger Black Walnut.

It didn't look like Rudolf to me, but I still like the decision to go all black on the buck's head. Seems to harmonize better with the total look, which is just about perfection in my book.

The stag has a very stately and elegant look so your changes must have worked. This is shaping up to be one fab guitar, Mark.

Thanks Zandit75, There is a real vibe to the simplicity of this guitar’s overall look. I think the woods work very well with a model called the Woodsman! Thanks Nemoman, The woods look old don’t they? Quote:
Thanks for the comments everyone! Mark

Since we're talking about color. I've been getting everything together to make a coffin case similar to this one:
Which seemed fairly straight forward until I decided I could make it much stronger and lighter using box joints to hold it all together. Of course box joints are typically used on boxes with 90 degree corners. Not so with a coffin case. So this involved making an adjustable sliding jig and a custom router table but, I am happy with my progress. Here's a practice joint done with about a 117 degree box joint: All this leads up to picking a color for the crushed velvet interior. It's a coffin case so I just can't bring myself to do red. The old cases tend to have colors that might match your great grandmother's lipstick so I'm trying to keep an open mind. Here's my three contenders. Tell me what you think or suggest something better that is in the realm of availability:

Cool thread, Mark. That black walnut went off like a bomb under finish! Not only do you make the guitar, but you make the case too!

Stag and velvet

I LOVE deep green velvet in a case. And I don't care about grandma's lipstick. Interesting fact about reindeer: males shed their antlers in the fall. Females do not. Thus, it follows that every reindeer you have seen pulling Santa's sleigh is female, as they always seem to have antlers. This may explain why Santa can find everyone on Christmas Eve. The reindeer are not scared to stop and ask for directions. What a spectacularly beautiful instrument you have built! Congratulations Paul

Thanks Kenneth. Like many of the old vintage guitars, this is a very lightly built guitar. With this model I'm thinking a lightweight coffin case is called for so I thought I'd give it a shot! Quote:
Thanks Paul, The things you learn on AGF! I like green also. I think it is the best color to compliment the colors of wood and it's the color I use for my custom Cedar Creek cases that come with the other models. In researching the old guitar cases I couldn't help but notice these odd colors used inside the cases. Now I'm sure that some of it may just be the fading of colors over time but, I am just not sure if these colors aren't an expectation in an old coffin case so I thought I'd test the waters. I'd be happy to use green if I'm not breaking some sort of sacred boundary.

LOVE the look of this guitar, Mark, everything about it. And like Paul, I'm a fan of deep green and it was also my first thought, kind of a sense of the redwood among the leaves in the forest.

I really like this one Mark. You always have incredibly beautiful guitars to showcase, but this one speaks to me. But the coffin case might hit a little too close to home
