Default NGD Halcyon #88 Lutz/Black Limba Dread

This NGD happened a VERY long time ago but I have been so dang busy that when I do actually get a chance to play I just want to enjoy it and not take pictures and post. I have been working 50-60 hours a week it seems all summer in addition to going back to school and doing real estate investing on the side. Somewhere in there I have to spend time with the family.

Well the guilt of keeping this beauty to myself finally got the better of me so I thought I would post a few quick pics. The guitar is super light. When Ed says he builds light, he means it. The thing is a feather. It is also the very definition of a banjo killer. The thing is loud. It actually makes for great fingerstyle because the sound is so easy to get out of it. It plays great and sounds amazing. Very responsive.

Lutz top, Black Limba back and sides, Wenge binding, Spanish Cedar neck, Ebony fret board and bridge. Smells amazing!

I would definitely build another with Ed. The quality is second to none. Even though he is a tiny outfit he turns out the highest quality work you will see. I would challenge anyone to find even the slightest imperfection in my guitar. The thing is flawless. Great job Ed.

Ha ha!

That was quite some time ago.

Black limba is by far the lightest wood I've ever used. It's so pretty as well.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it!

Ed

Nice to see what Halcyon is bringing to the table for affordable hand-made acoustics.

It's so very light. Such an enjoyable play. Everyone I have shared it with have marveled at it's awesomeness.

Thanks! I am biased of course but I think it is just beautiful. I love the look of the black limba and even the subtle flame it has. It is an amazing piece.

They are beautiful sets too. Hopefully someone sees mine and calls you up to snatch up one of them soon. I would hate to see amazing sets like those marinate for too long.

Congrats! I love a light build. You can almost feel every note when you play. And there is something about a sweet smelling guitar. Love that blast when you open the case.

Play on!

Thanks, Joe!

Simple and clean, though this rosette is a touch fancier than the usual. Practice for another project...

Looks like a keeper.

I had a Lutz-topped Halcyon OM, and man could that thing move air. I know what you mean. Ed builds light, and the notes just leap out with a "zing" to them that is truly unique. The OM was so loud that I can only imagine what the dread can do!

Hi Ed,
Have been considering a Halcyon for a good while. Any place I might hear one in the DC/VA area?

Also, can you tell me what it means to be "Lutz" spruce?

Thanks so much,
J.

There is a Halcyon 000 living in Raleigh NC. Lutz is a hybrid spruce. Sitka crossed with white spruce or Engleman...supposed to be warmer than sitka with more headroom...although sitka is a pretty fine tonewood in its own right...

Hi Jazzd,

What Dotneck says is correct. (To my knowledge)

Lutz is a hybrid spruce and behaves that way.

It combines the warmth of engelmann with the power/headroom of sitka. I really enjoy it.

We have no dealers in your neck of the woods I'm afraid.

All I can say to encourage you is that we have a lot of satisfied customers.

Cheers,

Ed

There will be one coming to Virginia in a couple months😀

If you're in the neighborhood, you'd be welcome to try it.
