Nice job, Rick....really enjoyed your cover!
I recently became a fan of this song after hearing Josh Turner's cover on YT. Such a beautiful piece. Danno

Not an easy song to pull off. Nice job, Rick.
As an aside, I’ve always wondered what Simon was trying to express in that song. He wrote the lyrics during another troubling time in our country’s history. I wasn’t into his music back then, so I wasn’t aware of his intent. Anybody have a handle on his message? Rb |

A good job on a really nice Paul Simon song, Rick. Probably his most melancholic melody and the lyrics reflected some very difficult years for America. Nixon was President and the country was in turmoil after Watergate and there was a feeling of hopelessness. The song has been covered a lot by artists like Dave Matthews, Indigo Girls, Eva Cassidy and of course AGF’s very own Rick! Thanks for playing it. Brought back many memories.

Thanks much, Barry. Simon's music has been a big influence on me in so many ways. I taught myself finger style by wearing out copies of each of his (solo and with Garfunkel) vinyl albums, beginning by learning to play his wonderful tunes "Kathy's Song," "Anji," and so many more. I came of age during the "American Tune" era (a single from the 1973 "Rhymin' Simon" album), and I fully resonated with the many emotions this song expresses.
As a footnote, years later as a student in NYC I had the good fortune of studying classical guitar at the studio run by Paul's brother, Eddie (the Guitar Study Center). One afternoon Art Garfunkel came in and offered a master class to a group of about a dozen of us. This memory, too, evokes in me a sense of nostalgia--even homesickness--which is one of the lyrical themes in "American Tune." Cheers, Rick |
