He will always be one of the greats. I am a better person for having known Tom.

Such sad news.

Tom's guitars were great, of course. More importantly, he was a lovely guy.

When writing my musings about 2015's Memphis Guitar Show for Fretboard Journal, I selected one of Tom's guitars as my favorite at the show.

I am proud to own one of Tom’s guitars, a beautiful Lutz/Maple Trinity Select. It was my first maple guitar that I bought from a fellow AGF’er who had commissioned it. I spoke to Tom over the phone about this guitar right before I committed to purchasing it and he bent over backwards to give me info on the build and even sent me more build pictures that he had of it.

Such a tragic loss for our community for sure.

I am also terribly saddened to hear the news. Recall the time he made for me at the show in Harrisburg, Pa., his enthusiasm for building great instruments, and the people who appreciated the work. Heart goes out to those closest to him.

Jeff

Like all of us here, I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this. I feel really bad for his family and what they must be going through. Back late June I visited Tom’s shop with my family as we were heading back from a camping trip in northern Michigan. We made a special stop to see him and I got to spend a few hours with him as my wife and 7 year old daughter went shopping in nearby Frankenmuth, MI.

Tom gave me a grand tour as he was in the process of expanding his workspace as to increase his capacity to build guitars. We spend some time going over details about the woods I wanted in my build and he was very easy to talk to, answering all my questions and concerns. But most of the time, we spend just chatting about life and family while still talking about guitars and trying out the 3 recently completed MDs he was getting ready to ship out. I was lucky enough to arrive just as he had finished those guitars. Tom played a little as well and I could see he loved to play them, not just build them.

He was looking forward to spending time camping with his family. I could sense he had a kind and gentle spirit. When my wife and daughter came back from Frankenmuth, he took an interest in conversing with my daughter and her ever mindful curiosity. He mentioned that his daughters and mine would get along famously and my daughter could learn a little about living in the country which she was very interested in learning about.

Before leaving we made tentative plans to come back when my guitar was ready so my daughter could meet his and hang out, do what kids do. Perhaps that might still happen, just don’t know. This is such a tragedy I still can’t wrap my head around it.

Such terrible news. I commissioned a wonderful sinker redwood and cocobolo Solace with him in 2017. That guitar was spectacular and I sadly sold it. I so badly wish I could afford to track that guitar down and buy it back...not just for what it offered in tone, but for all the great memories I have of communicating with him during the build. I'll be doing a lot of praying for his family. Just incredibly sad.

Very sad to read this. I spoke with him once, a very warm conversation. Was hoping to play one of his guitars in prep for commissioning one. His Mod D was calling me. Elegant, graceful instruments, much like man himself. Hoping his family finds peace.

HUGE loss. Tom was as talented as they come ...incredible craftsman with a real artist's eye. I'll be praying for his family in this *profoundly* difficult time.

Extremely shocked and saddened by the news when I saw and read Kostal's Instagram post. Let's celebrate the legacy he has contributed and honour his life long achievements as a loving father and an incredible luthier. An absolute honour to have one of his. My thoughts and prayers goes out to his lovely family and friends.

I only spoke to Tom a few times and he was kind. Very obviously kind. The guitars of his I was lucky enough to play were beautiful.

Default A Thread For Tom Doerr

If and when Toms daughters ever look Tom up…they may land here. Any words or memories you may have for Tom, say them. Even if we didn’t know him, we all revered his work. A maker of world class guitars.

How about we let his guitars speak for themselves.

Here’s the first recording I did with my wonderful Doerr Trinity 00.
