I am going to say if you want to put a pick up in your $200 guitar, go ahead.
Who cares what anybody else would or wouldn't do. I don't. No offense intended and I know you asked for opinions and advice.
Ok now I that I feel better, $100 is a reasonable investment no matter what you choose.

So how much do do you plan on playing amplified? If you are only occasionally working with an amp then I'll put in another vote for the iRig Acoustic Stage, which is a mic which clips onto the sound hole and comes with a nifty preamp. The sound is surprisingly good, and there is no installation needed. http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigacousticstage/

If you plan on playing through an amp a lot, then a built-in pickup is better because it's one less piece of equipment to fuss with.
