Default Studio Redo

I broke down my old rack today and wound up with a laundry basket full of cables. That's not even enough because I now have room for some of the gear I had in storage, so I'll be putting in a Redco order soon.

The racks are in the living room right now. Tomorrow I'll start moving computers, monitors, etc in the studio room. That might be a two day job because I'm still not sure where some things will go.

HOLY MACKEREL!

That is one huge lot of cables! I know you will dreaming of wiring tonight. You will probably toss and turn. Maybe even get tangled and bound up in your dreams.

Heck, I have been sweating the last two hours just trying to figure out how all of the Thunderbolt 4 & 3 cables differ and their true functions with connecting to USBC devices. And I only need ONE cable for my new device.

Good luck my friend. I hope it all goes back together smoothly.

See those orange tags? Every cable is labeled on both ends to make putting it all back together an easier task. I started doing that a couple of years back. It took quite a bit of time when I first did it but every time I've had to break down the rack for one reason or another, it make putting it all back together easy peasy. So that part of this redo doesn't bother me too much. The bigger job is going to be moving everything around in the room. I'm really looking forward to getting this project behind me.

I have been doing the same thing as well. I use to have a very complicated surround sound system with three separate amplifiers and even a preamp with surround sound. Then CD, DVD, Tape recorder, VHS and even Laser disc and three sets of speaker wires....I learned quickly labeling is the only way to go.

All my snakes between racks of gear have those same db25 multi pin connectors, and like jim1960 everything is labeled. So if I have to re-do, all the 1/4” TRS connectors stay plugged into their destination. I just disconnect a single connector in each cable, and putting it back together is simple.

Until I went into my storage unit to grab the Hardy and 1176 clones, I'd completely forgotten that I own the JDK R22 compressor at the bottom of the far rack.

If dust were a commodity, what I found behind the bookcase in my studio would fund a very comfortable lifestyle. That bookcase has been in the same spot for 15+ years so it's no surprise. I should have snapped a photo but I wanted that dust out of my life asap.

I still haven't broken down the computers and peripherals on my L-shaped desk. It's quite a bit of stuff and I may label some of it to make reconnecting everything go a bit quicker. I think I have enough cleaning yet to do in here to take up a couple of hours so moving the computers will probably have to wait until tomorrow.

Jim that is a fair amount of gear. Much more more cabling and connections to deal with, than my modest system And I recognize most of it BUT::
Refresh my memory the olive drab unit (next up from bottom right ) is some type of V Comp compressor ?(at least that is the name of a plugin emulation that looks just like that )

Also do not know know if you are aware of this web site I have used them they have a number of specialty items https://www.cableorganizer.com/

Yes, the second one up on the far rack is an Audio-Scape V-Comp. It's a Sta-Level clone and is absolutely gorgeous on vocals. It imparts a character I can't get from anything else I own.

That's a big job, Jim. I know how that dust accumulation happens! Best of luck! I'm glad you are so organized.

I'm not a fan of sitting around for hours trying to figure out my own cabling mistakes so being organized saves me much grief. There's still some work to do on the back of those racks. I need to install eye hooks so I can have some semblance of cable management and I need to install a pair of four space rails for the monitor out box that comes off my Dangerous monitor controller. I had that box made so that I can easily add another set of monitors to my system and allow them to be controlled via the Dangerous box which will allow me to volume match without having to dial it in every time.

Yes, cable management on the back of a big rack is always a tough challenge. I, also, always label the two ends of every cable so I have some record of how things are connected. It really helps when putting things back together.

It looks like you have invested in some very nice cables. Excellent!

Opps sorry fro the miscommunication I was referring to the Olive Drab 2 channel unit (so i guess the bottom one ) as being the one I used to have a Waves plugin HW emulation that looked sort of like it (probably just the unusual OD color )

But yes I would guess and tend to agree , Variable Mu type comps are nice on vocals That is the reason I bought my IGS Tubecore was vocals
