Default Has Martin Ever

Made a D-18 with 28 appointments (i.e. volute herringbone trim, inlays).

Simple and to the point.

Thanks Martin aficionados

In 1993 they did a D-93 to commemorate their 160th anniversary. It was essentially a D-18 with fancier trim.

If they have, it’s been as a Custom Shop special order.

whm

Edit: I stand corrected - I wasn’t aware of the D-93.

There's also the controversial CEO-5 (AKA the "El Jefe" model for those of us who belonged to the defunct Acoustic Guitar Magazine forum and know the backstory ), a 12-fretter with HD-28VS ivoroid binding/herringbone trim, bearclaw top with aging toner, striped ebony fingerboard, pearl herringbone rosette, and gold tuners - arguably the best value-per-dollar instrument of the CEO Series:

Does it have to be an 18 series? Probably the closest thing to what you are looking for in terms of features is a Martin HD-28M:

Gruhn Guitars— Martin HD-28M 1988

It was a “Guitar of the Month” model back in the late ‘80’s early ‘90’s. It’s an HD-28 with mahogany back and sides. Since it’s a 28 series, it also has a diamond at the headstock joint.

Apparently there have been a handful of D-18s with some or all of the 28 series features. The Elliot Easton model previously mentioned is one:

Martin D-18EE (Elliot Easton)

A Jimmy Buffett model, but the JB model does not have a diamond joint at the headstock:

Martin HD-18JB (Jimmy Buffett)

And an HD-18LE, another Guitar of the Month, but like the JB signature edition it also does not have a diamond headstock joint:

Martin HD-18LE

The other guitars listed above also seem to fit.

I’m probably wrong about this, but, I thought the original inception of a 21 was in fact a mahogany 18 style body with an ebony fingerboard, bridge and position markers like a 28 style. Not sure how I came to believe this. It doesn’t seam to be the case anymore.

Style 21 has traditionally been rosewood body (back and sides) with style 18 trim/cosmetic details - black or tortoise binding versus white/ivoroid on style 28, and simpler rosette design and fretboard position markers than on style 28. The current Martin style 21 guitars have ebony bridge and fretboard, but during the 1950's and 1960's they were built with rosewood bridge and fretboard (also late 90's and early 2000's) as were the style 18 guitars of those periods.
