Default Shop for strings in New York

Can you recommend me a Shop in New York in the touristic areas that have a lot of strings choice and very good prices?
I have the change to get there in 2 weeks.

Yes, GC Times Sq. You could almost walk right past it. It only has a small sign but it's next to Carmine's Italian Restaurant, a landmark in over eating, and it's downstairs.

Default couple other BIG big box stores

There's probably a fair few tourists wandering around 34th Street, where the flagship Sam Ash store is:

And the Union Square Guitar Center is huge, bigger than the Times Square branch, and arguably a touristic attraction in its own right:

In that area you'll find 30th Street Guitars and Rogue Music as well - much smaller joints than Sam Ash or Guitar Center, but depending on where you are, they may be a little closer to you.

There are plenty of choices in that area though the part of the question about “good prices” is another issue. It’s NYC so “good prices” is a different issue. Good compared to online suppliers or good compared to other brick and mortar stores ?

First of all thank you so much to everyone for your suggestions. Very useful.

I mean good compared to... european prices

Well, I understand that online prices are for sure better, but for good I mean within 20% more than those. Is it possible?

If you are going to be visiting from Europe I think you will be quite pleased by string prices in New York, especially those at Guitar Center and Sam Ash.

Plus, no postage/shipping charges - that alone should easily make it worth your while to stock up while you're there.

How do the VAT taxes affect string (and guitar) prices in Europe?

They affect prices in a bad way

To be serious, it depends on brands and on sellers. And I speak only about Italy.
About guitars I can say that factory guitars costs much more here. Because you have what you call street price that is 40% off price list. Consider to pay here a price between the right price list and 8% more.
On boutique guitars, is more or less the same. For example on a guitar that you pay 3.500$ (but you have to add local taxes if I understand right) here you can pay 5000-5200$.
About string once again depends on Brands. Here you can pay a price that is from +20% to +120% (and sometimes more) of your online prices.
If I buy from US I have to add shipping cost and 30% for import and italian taxes.

If you happened to be near SoHo, look for Rudy’s Music

I've never bought strings there, but they sure do have a fine selection of even finer instruments. Gordon, the acoustic manager, really knows his stuff. I always enjoy my conversations with him.
