I use an emery board whenever I cut my nails, I just go ahead and finish with the emery board and the calluses get smooth and don't catch on strings. No one recommended that to me, I just sort of did it as a solution. I'll bet there are scores of players who smooth out callouses (I need to learn how to spell callouses?)

emory boards are cheap. others have a diamond file that works for them. i use the emory boards and they do work very well for smoothing.

I play everyday, fingerstyle, on low action adjusted steel guitars : I have to file my calluses a bit from once a week to every two weeks because they tend to peel off when they get too thick.
Everybody has to find a way for his own case because we do not all get the same culluses thickness, peeling of getting creased.

I use hand creme or lip balm to keep my callouses softer. If they dry our and get rough, I file them a bit with an emory board.

Yep I file my calluses all the time. If I don't I risk them peeling off and then I loose more thickness then I loose by filing. I especially need to to file them if I pick up my 12 string. The thin octave strings will catch on any little edge of callus.
I keep an emory board in my top pocket all the time. |
