Default Even Christopher Thile has problems flying with his instruments

If you haven't heard Chris Thile play mandolin, you should. He was flying Delta and tweeted about their policy concerning guitars and other small instruments.

Judging by the reply, I'm guessing some don't realize that, no matter what policy is written, the flight crew has the final say.

I try to only fly Southwest...haven't had a problem with a guitar in almost 18 years.

He did end up being allowed to bring his instrument with him and was given an apology.

Yep, what the flight crew says goes. If it's that important, be ready to step aside.

I can understand a guitar not fitting in the overheads, but a mandolin or a violin? Just how big are those flight cases? Can't be any larger than half the size of one of those ginormous spinner rollaboards that people stuff into the overhead bins.

When I fly with instruments now, if I have a guitar & a couple of dulcimers, I put the dulcimers into their heavily padded bags and put them in turn into a padded double-dulcimer bag, which I check. Baggage handlers treat it like an expensive golf bag (even though it's embroidered "I (heart) My Dulcimers," they probably think that's the name of a boutique golf club company). If I'm taking only one dulcimer, I fill the other compartment with my socks, underwear, rolled-up T-shirts, etc. I check a spinner suitcase too. I carry on my Voyage-Air, which also holds whatever device I'm using as a computer, and as big a purse as I can get away with (or a small purse in a big tote bag) to put under the seat.

Oh, and I fly SW. (I pay the Early Bird A group fee --still cheaper than any other airline's checked-bag fee).
