He's probably visiting another client, spec'ing or furthering that job, and will return claiming he had to go to X-number of stores to get the exact hardware for yours.

I've been screwed by too many contractors in the past. Three times come to mind and I'm currently at odds with my wife over a completely unreasonable quote for a pair of bathroom and a kitchen remodel. I've learned to do a lot of basic electrical and plumbing things myself - even going so far as to learn how to hang drywall, wainscoting and molding - not to mention painting a two story foyer. Heck, now I'm tempted to learn how to build cabinets. It's gotta be easier than luthery!

How long should a visit to Home Depot/ Lowes or the local hardware store last?
  1. Somebody else: 1 hour
  2. Me: 4 hours
  3. Also me: until the money runs out, usually about three minutes

It’s often the case that they’re specing out their next job.

Happens in many fields of work. Ask an attorney how many billable hours are in a day. Some days, few. Others, many.
