NGD/NAD! Budget Apartment Rig.
Hi folks,
Awhile back I created a thread asking for suggestions for a foray into the electric. I left that thread with the intention to save up for a Les Paul, and leaning towards the Fender Mustang amp. Well, while the saving was slow going, I played more and more guitars, and ultimately ended up going in an entirely different direction: Squire Classic Vibe 50's Telecaster: At first I thought I wanted humbuckers, but after playing more guitars in the local shops, I came to learn that the bridge pickup on a telecaster through a crunch setting creates a tone that sounds awesome for the kinds of stuff I wanted to play. From there I was stuck between going either the MIM route, or going with the more affordable squire. The squire ended up coming out on top, not only because of the price tag, but I preferred the neck, and to my unrefined ear, sounded just as good. Action was quite low out of the box. There was a minor buzz on the G string, but after replacing the stock 9s with 10s, the buzz is gone. I might consider playing with mods some day, but as of right now I love this guitar just how it is. Yamaha THR5 The more I read about yamaha's THR10 amps, the more I felt like it was exactly what I needed. After finding one to try locally, I knew it was what I wanted, however it was a little more than I was hoping to spend. Enter the TH5. Significantly cheaper, with no compromise to sound, while the features it lacks from the THR10 were not overly important to me. I feel like this amp gives me lots of options for sound, without becoming overwhelming. It's very functional, with a cool aesthetic to boot! I haven't been able to put this guitar down since coming home with it. This rig gives me a chance to dabble in a new form of guitar playing on a budget, while still providing great tones. Couldn't be happier!

It's a nice combo. I have owned a tele of that model and used it with a THR10. It's a nice combo for sure. Have fun!

Congrats on a very cool home rig!
These Classic Vibe 50's Teles are made out of Pine, just like the early Broadcasters and Esquires--which makes them very cool. So you have what we call a Pinecaster! The CV Tele's are highly regarded over at the Telecaster forum. |

Oh the grains look like ash but that’s even cooler if they’re pine like the 50’s Esquires! |

Congrats! I regret selling my THR5. FWIW, it sounds decent patched into a PA system using the headphone jack. I loved taking mine to gigs, getting killer tone, and having everyone ask me, "where's your amp?" The look on their face when I pointed at the THR5 was pricless!

I've fantasized about a Pine body Snake Head Esquire build one of these days, with a P-90 in it--something that rips and screams rock blues and looks the part! |
