You can do either, or both (hybrid picking, which I do), though hybrid picking obviously requires at least some skill with a flat pick. There's a lot you can't do without a flat pick, and those things tend to be more commonly heard on electric guitar, but as you know there are some electric players who don't use a flat pick at all so it's up to you.
