Default The hardest thing about growing your nails for picking...

Learning how to take a dip of Skoal left handed!
Getting it all over the floor, walls, ceiling, in the dog's eyes, etc! (Exaggerating a bit.
That stuffs too expensive to waste!

You know, they are not quite long enough yet to play with yet, but I can still hear a pleasant difference in my padding the strings. I guess they are giving the finger pads more back support and causing a mildly sharper sound. Even if I don't like it when they get long enough to play with, I think I will at least buff them back to where they are right now. Sounds good to me.

I've had to switch which hand I pop open a soda can with so I don't chip a nail pulling the tab. Small price to pay for good sound.

Cleaning them 3 times a day is quite annoying too.

There's a lot to dislike, and I've almost scrapped the idea several times and cut them back.
I've come this far, so I will see it thru to see if I like them enough to keep them.
If I can only have the tone of Ed Gerhard it'll all be worth it.
What is certain is that I DON'T like finger picks.

Mine are thin and flimsy - I've tried every hardener/thickener/strengthener out there.

About to go get acrylic nails!

Another audience member at the Doyle Dykes clinic I went to asked him about nails. He answered that he uses acrylic nails and told us about the funny looks he gets from non-playing friends and family. "Sure, we'll go fishing after I finish getting my nails done." Cracked up the whole audience. Sure sound good, though.

I have never felt any need to "grow out" my nails for fingerstyle. If you looked at my hands you would find little to tell that I played guitar (for about 40 years) at all.
My lefts are very short, of course, but the rights are scarcely longer... Usually about 1/16"
I use the same technique classical players do; a combination of nail and flesh that allow the nail to break across the string just enough to produce a clear tone.

The most important thing is to keep them at optimal length and to bevel them properly from the underside... Preferably with a fine-cutting diamond file.

I think that's where I am now, and I like the sound. If I don't like em longer I'll scale back to this.
