mountainmaster, many congratulations on your beautiful X20 nylon. The gold color over the silver really pops. I'm sure that we'll be seeing more Emeralds with that color in the future.

I was hoping my x-20 6 string would be on today's video but no such luck, looks like next week. I really like the celtic knot fretboard markers and EVO gold frets. Mine will be having gold mother of pearl shamrock markers with EVO frets. I hope mine looks half as good as yours

The email came overnight and I paid off the remaining balance immediately, but I wasn't going to say anything publicly about the custom X20 until it is safely here in my hands. But the video outed me..... You all actually saw it well before I did. Yesterday was a crazy work day and I did not get to log on at all or even watch the shipping video until about 10:30 last night. Now the shipping countdown clock starts. I can afford to be patient -- funny how you can "make do" with a stock X20, a custom X20-12, a stock X30, two X7's, and other CF guitars. I expect this one will quickly become my favorite and then we'll see how the collection thins after that.
On an unrelated note, it was time to shut off and purge the lawn sprinklers yesterday before piping starts to freeze. Somehow (??) I managed to badly chip my thumbnail and was forced to file it - and others - down almost all the way. But the nails should be grown back out enough in time to play the new one finger style, which is about 75% of my repertoire. |

my options
If you are asking me, it was easy. I already own a pure stock green X20 and love it. But my hands are aging and my fretting hand likes shorter scale lengths these days. So I ordered a 24.6" scale which matches my custom X20-12 built two years ago. I test-drove the concept by playing my current 25.5" scale X20 with a capo on the first fret for two full weeks before pulling the trigger.
The other thing that I wanted was only 20 frets total. Alistair likes to build with 24 frets because he can, but I never use anything above 19 and rarely above 17. The extended 24-fret fingerboard sometimes gets in the way of my strum stroke, because my arm drapes differently across the body - credit to the arm bevel. So one option was shortening the fret board by four frets, like my X20-12 and the twelve string side of a Chimaera. Between the time of the order and starting the build, Emerald re-worked the X20 in July. The new scalloped end should handle that issue for me nicely. Once I confirmed that the new version would be OK (they offered the choice because of the timing) the only custom feature was the shorter scale. I also omitted any pickup but had the interior surface prep done, in case I ever want to add a K&K. Upon delivery I will see how well it all worked out, but my confidence is high. I will also get to compare the two versions directly. |

You're a braver man than I am, Earl. I would not trust my instincts to order an Emerald with differences in geometry, especially given my past proclivities for resale. I ordered my X30 and my new X20-12 with satin finishes and no electronics....

I don't see it as much of a risk, RP. I already have an X20 that I love, and the short scale is a fairly minor tweak, already tested via my X20 and a couple of other guitars on hand. The only resale on the horizon is maybe the stock X20 if the new one is loved as much as I expect. I may also keep it anyway, dedicated to altered tunings and keep the new short scale in standard tuning for ragtime and Piedmont finger picking.
We'll all find out together when it gets here. |
