Today when I arrived at the shop, I found Steve's rim/back assembly out of the mold, and the back was trimmed flush to the sides.
This precursor to a closed box is always an encouraging point, only bettered by gluing on the top:

Also, to accommodate Steve's love of fragrant guitars, we picked up a little something to put inside before the top goes on:

You're gonna love this, Steve!

I've never seen one that big in Nac, but I'm sure it could be done. You DO need to visit here regardless.
Steve and I have been discussing necks, and we both like the idea of a laminated construction. Mahogany, for the main lams, usually gets first choice. Then the effort is made to tie in other elements in the guitar--in this case a center stringer of walnut. The request was made then for another accent, possibly Kiaat or Koa? You know, match some elements already present in the instrument. A search was made, and we were surprised to locate some bees-wing Narra, a cousin to Padauk, but mainly with golden hues. Steve gave the thumbs up after seeing this composition:

IMG_2076.jpg

When you count the black veneer lines separating the stringers, this is a 9-piece neck. Which means glue up must be peppy. Everything ready to hand, laid out in sequence, and phone off the hook:

IMG_2079.jpg

Outside the neck pattern two holes are drilled either end to pin everything together and prevent slippage while clamping. Here is the neck in its embrace of clamps:

Thanks for looking,

Steve

I agree, that neck will be lovely but I am looking forward to a burger like that during my next visit.

Then a burger like that you shall have! Thanks Dennis, and thanks Tom for the kind words. One more shot of neck clamping:

This tunnel view gives a sense of balancing clamp pressure in the glue-up. Now while that assembly drys and cures, we'll move on to top bracing:

Thanks for watching,

Steve

Looks good! I always like seeing the box with just back and sides. You never get such a good view of the internal construction again once the top goes on! I’m interested in seeing the arm bevel / rest progressing. Never seen step by step how they’re made before.

Bob, I'll try to take detailed pics of that step once we get to it. However, I'll warn you our approach is really old school. There is a dearth of power tools in our execution of this step. We learned our technique in Cremona 275 years ago...

Very kind of you! As it turns out the the Cremonian hand tool bevel technique is just what I’m interested in [emoji3] Seriously, I’m just happy to have a seat in the peanut gallery. Whatever pics are convenient to share would be great.

It's always good news when the neck department clocks in.
They showed up today and actually rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty on Memorial Day. I love those guys.
Some of their work:

They told me what they were doing, so if you have any questions I'll be able to answer them for you.
Thanks,

Steve

A couple of shots for Steve-o, based on his desire for fragrance.
We scrapped the cheeseburger idea (ate it, ya know) and opted for a fragrant infill. What is being clamped into the end block is a strip of eastern red cedar (aromatic cedar) which will not only smell great, but repel moths.
We glue in this vertical strip to help reinforce the end block and help guard against splitting. And it smells nice.

Thanks for watching,
