Default "Counting Sheep" - original fingerstyle

Hi all,

Another composition from my upcoming solo CD. Like the early two tracks, this is still a pretty rough mix...just the raw recording from 5 very nice mics from John's mic closet (a pair of Schoeps CMC6/MK41 wide cardioid SDCs in ORTF with a Coles 4038 ribbon for a mono bass track, all in the "sweet spot," plus a pair of Neumann KM130 omni SDC on a high stand for natural room reverb) with minimal post-processing applied.

The tune is a result of sleepless nights spent composing during recurring bouts of insomnia so I though the title was appropriate. Hope y'all like it...

Phil

Great playing Phil. Not sure there is enough time left for me to get half that good!

OH....that WAS NICE!! I understand about that kind of song keeping you up and composing!! This one turned out exceptionally well. Great recording sound with top gear and attention to detail!
Regards,
Fred

Thanks for sharing the tune and the recording gear. You might want to post it for comments on the recording forum.

The stage pulls left as the volume on the left is between two and three dBs louder. Input was hot with a number of
overs. It's a fairly congested sound (proximity effect and likely a case of too many cooks (mikes) spoils the broth).
IMO ditch the ORTF and use fewer mikes.

Thank you, all, for the kind words.

Derek, your comments, too, are appreciated, as always, however I would hope that you'd notice that I said it was a "rough mix"? I didn't post it to Recording but posted it to Show & Tell because I'm after input on the composition and the playing...my own fault I guess for being impressed with the $12K (CDN $$) of mics that the engineer casually pulled out of his cupboard...not necessarily on the recording of it since I think it's too early in the process to actually do that.

At any rate, pan issues are easily dealt with, the "overs" are likely due to a hot mixdown (or SoundCloud's conversion and downsampling) and not the recording itself, I'm sure. The rough mix does lack some "air" and I suspect that will be fixed when some actual mixing is actually done...I hope you'll check back in a few months and be able to hear the difference.

And, I like ORTF!

Phil

Right? Oh, how I wish I'd not given up on guitar for so long. Alas, life is short, and it's sweeter because we get to listen to great playing like this. Thanks for sharing, Phil.

Great sound.

Try doing a slower version for comparison to let the notes breathe.

I have no qualms with this tune or the quality, top shelf in my book! Wondering which of your guitars this was, from a glance at your signature... The jumbo Larrivee?

Got it in one, Dustin. My J-09 is my "short-scale" baritone, has a 25.7" scale length and is strung for CGCFGC (whole step down from DADGAD) with a custom 015, 022w, 026, 035, 045 and 070 EXP PB set. This tune uses a partial capo, a Shubb banjo capo, on the 4 high strings at the 4th fret giving a CGEABE open tuning, kind of a Cmaj7/min6 chord thing.

I'm glad everyone is liking the tune!

Phil
