Exactly the tips and advice I was looking for.
Counterweights, a leg in the same direction as the boom, don't cheap out.

Another vote for the round cast-iron base. I always seem to step on or trip over legs on mic stands. And when I record singers, they always complain about legs on stands.

I have four of that type of stand that I use. I purchase the full size stands and cut about half the length of the center tube. If you're seated the extra height just gets in the way.
