Silking in Cedar tops
Is silking as prevalent in cedar tops as it is in spruce?

Sometimes but not always.

I would not have thought so, but I just received a guitar with Rocky Mountain Western Red Cedar (eastern BC) that has spectacular silking. My guess about this is that it grows more slowly than coastal WRC, but of course luthiers would know better than me on this. Luthier Rye Bear in BC has ridiculously good cedar...and so does John Kinnaird.

My cedar top mcnally OM has phenomenal beautiful silking. I don't that's necessarily the norm. But some pretty nice spruce lacks obvious/pronounced silking too.

I was just curious cause cedar is new to me and today I was looking at the consistency of the silking. Really came out today in the sun.

This WRC has a LOT of silking, and a bit of Bear Claw, too. Hope it is visible Cheers Paul

As Tim said, sometimes…
This Western Red Cedar top was harvested in the Bull Run watershed in Oregon in the 1980s by my luthier. It had too much dark latewood for his luthier’s classical guitar clients, but it was seasoned, well quartered and presented beautiful medullary across the top so we used it in my guitar.

Well quartersawn cedar can exhibit the same medullary rays as well quartered spruce

I have two Cedar topped guitars and both have very nice silking, as does Redwood.
