Brownsville is (was?) a house brand from Sam Ash. Most of the models I’ve seen were made in Korea. Overall, decent quality entry guitars.

I wouldn’t be surprised if your guitar was very similar (if not structurally identical) to the earlier MIK Gretsches.

Mine was made in China. It was a gift from a steel company to one of their managers, he kept it in his office for 20 years , never played it. When he passed away, his heirs sold it to the guy I bought it from. It may have been custom built, as it is excellent in every way, plays like a dream, sounds fantastic, looks great !!!! It came with a hard shell, SKB case that retails for $215......I'm very happy with this guitar......

According to what I could find there were no custom options available on Brownsville guitars. What you saw was what you got. Maybe folks though just never saw the guy the guitar was presented to play it in his office as he would only sneak it out with him when he was smoking in the boy's room.

Definitely one of Sam Ash's house brands (along with Angelica and the better-known Carlo Robelli) and, sorry to say, not custom-made - I remember these from the late-90's/early-2K's, hanging on the rack at the local branches. Not bad entry-level hollowbodies, IMO a better value-per-dollar than the contemporary Gretsch Historic Series, and an excellent mod platform if you're so inclined - I understand these are the hot setup on guitars of this type, and for not a lotta bucks to boot:

Entirely possible that Samick may have produced at least some of the better ones, but IME (I was doing contract work for Sam Ash at the time, and had hands-on access to the entire lineup) the Brownsville name - in fact derived from the Brooklyn neighborhood where their first store/residence was located - was affixed to a line of imported guitars of variable quality/origin (FYI I have a period Brownsville 12-string electric - very similar to Danelectro in quality/appointments/construction, and most definitely not a Samick product) as well as some low-end electronics; the name, like the Angelica house label of the 1970's (most of which were high-quality Japanese manufacture, with at least some made by Fujigen Gakki) and Guitar Research line of electronics and accessories, was ultimately retired in favor of the Carlo Robelli brand...

i don't know what you seen, but what i see is a very nice well built guitar, decent pickups, grover tuners, whammy bar, nice inlays, stays in tune fairly well, all it needs is some lighter strings. It came with a SKB case which retails for $215.....i passed it around to my friends the other day, they all liked it too... !! some people are raving about the color....condition is near mint, which is great for a 22 year old guitar....
