High E buzz on my Bourgeois
My high E is buzzing slightly and I can't tell if it's coming from the nut or the bridge. The action is good so that's not the cause. What's the best way to troubleshoot it?
Thanks! |

An easy start would be loosening the string all the way then lift the string off the bridge just to break the contact point, retighten to pitch and keep your fingers crossed.

Does it only buzz in the open position? Or only certain frets?

I had a low E buzz I couldn't identify. I ended up pushing it from behind the nut to get the string to move back and forth through the nut and it eliminated it. Try with a capo and see if it goes away and keep moving the capo up the neck.

In 2007, I bought a brand new Gibson Songwriter Deluxe from GC. Soon after getting it home, I was getting fret buzz. I took it back to GC, they diddled about with it, but the buzz was still there.
That was when I discovered the now-deceased Steve Wildey (first-rate guitarist, tech, and guy) at Glades Guitars in Pembroke Pines. He found the root cause: a few uneven frets. He worked on the guitar, and the problem was solved. Maybe that's the issue with your Bourgeois. |

I've restrung it a couple of times already and that didn't solve it. Thanks though!

The buzz is there in the open position and capo'd, which makes me think it's the saddle.

Is there any excessive groove in the saddle where the string lays?

It can be a host of things. Weather change - humidity up / down, low nut slot, slightly high fret, or simple truss rod adjustment. It can be very fustrating, but it definitely can be solved. If the saddle is the same as before, I would look at these others first. A very slight Truss rod adjustment might be the first place to start. If you don’t feel comfortable with doing it yourself, a skilled luthier will have you fixed up quickly. Good luck.
