Default Ziricote and a Tiger Myrtle

Thought I share some pictures of two guitars I recently completed. These guitars feature a new design that has been in the works for over a year now and one that will replace my previous OM model. Besides the overall body shape, there are numerous cosmetic changes and a tonal shift that emphasizes more clarity and "focus".

But mostly, I thought you might enjoy the backs of both of these guitars. I love the grain pattern on the German Spruce / Ziricote which somehow reminds me of a cathedral. The other is Carpathian Spruce / Tiger Myrtle and features what might be one of the nicest sets of wood I have ever encountered -- one of those sets you acquire that you almost hate to let go of. Tiger Myrtle itself is a very valuable wood but the degree of figuring in this set is pretty remarkable - truly, a rare find. I have some more pictures in the photo section of my website (the link is right below). Both of these guitars are leaving for their respective customers on Thursday. I will be sad to see them go...

Simon, you always do such clean work and these are definitely beautiful examples..I love the new design, and I think the new owners are certainly going to be pleased. I guess it was definitely worth it for Jim to sell his other guitars, in anticipation of getting the German/Ziricote Fay (I'm assuming, of course, that its going to him)....Kudos once again Simon!!

Hi Hen,
Actually, the German / Ziricote is heading over to Austria. I am in the process of finishing up a couple more guitars and then I will start work on Jim's German / Ziricote guitar with cutaway and a Ryan armrest bevel. We found a beautiful set of Ziricote for Jim's guitar with a very unique grain pattern - I think it will turn out to be a very striking instrument.

Hi Simon,

Too bad for Jim, he has to wait a bit longer....but great news for us (hopefully) as we might be able to "see" it getting built. I, for one, am going to keep an eye out for the build thread (hint hint Jim). Always a pleasure to see your guitar creations Simon...one day I'll be able to do more then just "see" one...one day,

Aloha,

Hen

Thank you very much for sharing those pictures. That just might be the nicest looking Ziricote I have ever seen... and have always found that wood to have a strong appeal. As for the Tiger Myrtle -- that is just a truly remarkable looking set! Do you have any more of that wood? I shouldn't be asking, but it is so strikingly beautiful.

All the best,
Bill

Bill (TaylorPlayer),
I have another very nice set of similarly figured Tiger Myrtle but not quite in the same league as this one set. I am not the best photographer (still in the process of learning to capture decent photos and I desperately need to get a tripod) and so it is hard to really see in the photo -- however, the figure of the Tiger Myrtle has sharp, defined edges to the peaks and valleys. Most flame or quilt figure tends to have a sinusoidal flow to it with rounded peaks and valleys. However, even non-figured Tiger Myrtle is still very beautiful. It is an Australian tonewood but I am beginning to see more North American luthiers use it in their builds. And tonally, it is an excellent wood.

Greg,
This is a relatively new bridge design - I implemented the basic shape about a year and a half ago but have made two revisions to the design. It is somewhat hard to see in the pictures -- but there is a bevel that extends around the entire bridge. I like your new bridge design a great deal too!!!

Steve,
Thanks!!! And congrats on your very beautiful #18 -- the wood choices on that guitar were just outstanding.
