Default New Build

Hey folks,

I mentioned in an earlier thread that I was considering guitar building classes with a custom builder. Class started yesterday. Here are the specifics so far...

Swiss spruce top with some sweet bearclaw (pics below)
Ziricote back and sides (wood is on the way)
OM body
Sound port
Maple binding

I'm still considering other options for the rest of the guitar. My buddy Jason and his dad, Mike, are also in the class. They both chose Red spruce for the tops.

Here's the Swiss top...

And another...

And also Jason and his dad's tops after being glued...

More pics to come as the project continues. Sorry the camera and my photographic abilities are sub-par.

Default back set

This is my first attempt at building. It's a good thing I have a "mentor" watching what I do. I have to say that I get a bit tense when making cuts or holes on such an expensive piece of wood.

The sides are pretty striking as well. I'll try to post pics of them next week. I also have a piece of Z for the fret board....I cant wait to get it together.

That sounds really intriguing. I would do it in a second if I were near Louisville.

Looks like a very exciting and interesting project Mark. Keep the pictures coming as you go along. Maybe one day I'll give building a try.

Nice looking materials!

Default Update

It's been a while since I've updated this thread. During the process of bending the sides, one of them cracked. If you look, there is a crack on the upper bout. It was fine when we put it in the form, but came out with the crack.

The supplier was gracious enough to provide these replacement sides:

Bending went well...here are the sides in form with neck and tail blocks and the back side kerfing.

I have glued the kerfing on the top side of the sides and next week I will start working on the side braces and cutting the sound port.

The top is coming along. Here is the rosette...sorry for the poor pic...

We've made some progress with the top bracing as well...

There is a possibility that I will use this fret board. There is one groove near the 12 fret position that is a bit off, so I may have to chunk it.

I will post more pics as the weeks progress.

Thanks for looking.

Looking great. Mark, what was your prior experience with woodworking? Any at all? Just wondering if these type of classes take you from zero to 100 or if you should have some sort of experience before taking it on.

Thanks for sharing.

I've had no woodworking experience prior to this. I've done some very elementary carpentary work (finishing my basement with my neighbor), but nothing like this. Our instructor likes it like that. He said with a newbie, he doesnt have to spend time trying to change someone's bad habits and he doesnt have to contend with egos.

If you are considering something like this, I highly recommend doing it. This experience has really be great. I'm already considering my next build.

Nice work Mike. I wish there was a similar class offered in my area. I think with the proper tools, jigs and instruction I might be able to make a custom instrument. The wood you chose for the sides is incredible. I am looking forward to seeing and hearing the finished guitar.

I've had that same experience with sound technicians.

That's going to be one beautiful guitar!
