Advice on electronics for a resonator
I want to put electronics into my Liberty resonator. Anyone have recommendations on the right system? And amplifiers as well?

Boy you've got me, I've been using one of those old thin DeArmond magnetic pickups for a long time.....it's ok, but not very acoustic. I never had much luck with transducers but maybe somebody makes something that works these days.

it depends on what kind of resonator... if it's a cone (dobro), i've had decent luck with a fishman cone pickup in my dobro. basically sits on the screw just above the cone.
the guy [in your area] to see on this - any pickup for whatever kind of resonator you have - would be paul beard at http://www.beardguitars.com. he's in hagerstown. in addition to building, he does repairs and runs a parts store out of his shop. |

The Highlander pickup is considered the best for resophonic instruments.
They now make pickups for spider cones as well as biscuit. It's not a cheap solution, but has the best overall sound. The pickup and preamp get installed inside the guitar, but the battery is enclosed in an external box so you don't have to get inside to change batteries. This system was designed by Rick Turner. Here's a link: http://highlanderpickups.com/ I'm thinking about getting one for my Dobro DM33, but I'll probably wait until I get a National than get the biscuit bridge model. drive-south |

Jerry Douglas uses a Fishman and sounds pretty good.
Paul Beard has some good choices too http://www.beardguitars.com/Old%20Be...ification.html Bob Brozman's page has a section on mic'ing a reso including which mics, where to point them and how to eq it. That is all I've used when the few times I've gigged with mine. |
